Types of Pets We Transport

    Dog Transportation

Dogs are the moves we plan most often. We match the crate to your dog’s size, book around airline rules and summer heat limits, and plan the routing through San Diego (SAN) so nothing turns into a last-minute scramble on travel day.

  • Cat icon representing cat transportation services

    Cat Transportation

Cats travel best when the day stays calm and the waiting is short. We choose airline-approved carriers, sort out the cabin-or-cargo question early, and plan the schedule so your cat spends as little time at the airport as possible.

  • Green bird icon representing bird transportation services

    Bird Transportation

Birds need a little more care: species-specific paperwork, airline approval, and travel that holds a steady temperature. We walk you through the health certificates and routing so nothing slips through the cracks.

  • Hamster icon representing small mammal transportation services

    Small Mammals

Rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small pets travel in approved carriers on carefully timed routes. We confirm that the airline will accept your pet well before the date, so there are no surprises.

  • Iguana icon representing reptile and exotic pet transportation services

    Reptiles and Exotic Pets

Reptiles and exotic pets each come with their own rules. We review the airline policies and temperature requirements one by one and build a route that genuinely suits your animal, not a one-size-fits-all plan.

Nearest Airport In San Diego With Pet Services:

San Diego International Airport (SAN) Location: San Diego, California, approximately 3 miles northwest of downtown San Diego. San Diego International Airport serves as the primary hub for domestic and international pet travel in the region. Its proximity to downtown reduces ground travel time, which can be helpful for pets sensitive to long transfers.

  • Pet Relief Areas:

SAN has multiple pet relief areas, including outdoor spaces near terminal entrances and indoor post-security relief stations in both Terminals 1 and 2. These areas feature artificial grass, waste disposal stations, and water access for pets.

  • Who actually handles your pet at SAN

GAT Cargo runs the cargo warehouse at 2955 North Harbor Drive, Suite 140, and that is where a pet booked on Alaska Air Cargo Pet Connect is dropped off and collected. Drop-off and collection run Monday to Friday, 5:30am to 9:00pm, Saturday 5:00am to 7:00pm and Sunday 5:00am to noon. American Airlines Cargo is the other option here, and the only one of the big three still running a public live animal program: Delta and United carry pets in the hold only for active military and State Department moves. USDA endorsement is fastest through VEHCS, the routine VEHCS desk is staffed Monday to Friday 7:00am to 4:30pm Central, and there is no in-person or drop-off service anywhere.

  • Pet-Friendly Airline Services:

SAN’s airlines accommodate pet travel with options for in-cabin and cargo transport, catering to the needs of small and large pets.

  • Temperature limits and ground handling:

Airlines decide whether a pet flies, not the airport. Most US carriers refuse an animal in the hold when the forecast ground temperature at any point on the itinerary sits outside roughly 45F to 85F, and they layer seasonal embargoes on top of that. Between drop-off and loading your pet waits in the cargo handler building rather than a dedicated animal terminal, so the acceptance window and the handler opening hours are what a travel date has to be built around.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a best time of year to move a pet from San Diego?

San Diego’s mild climate is one less thing to worry about; there is no long heat or cold season that forces a pet off most flights. That gives us flexibility to pick the calmest routing and the best departure time from San Diego, rather than working around the weather. We still watch the forecast at the destination, which may be less forgiving.

Will my pet fly out of SAN?

Most San Diego-area pets depart from San Diego International (SAN), the main airport for the area. When it does not have the right routing for your dates, we plan around a nearby hub to keep the journey short. We handle the check-in timing and the airline’s crate and booking rules so the airport day stays calm and predictable.

Do you offer door-to-door pet transport from San Diego?

Yes. Many San Diego families want the whole move handled, so we can arrange ground pickup from your home, the airport hand-off, and delivery at the other end. One coordinator stays with the journey from your San Diego door to the destination.

Can you ship a pet overseas from San Diego?

Yes. San Diego has limited direct international service, so many overseas moves connect through a larger gateway. We plan the full route from your San Diego pickup through that connection and prepare the destination country’s import paperwork. See our destination guides for what each country requires.

What parts of the San Diego area do you pick up from?

We arrange pickups across San Diego and nearby communities like La Jolla, Chula Vista, Carlsbad, Oceanside, and we serve the wider area through our West Coast service area, which also covers Los Angeles and San Francisco.

How is the cost of a San Diego pet move decided?

Every San Diego move is priced on its own, because the route, airline fees, your pet’s size and crate, the season, and the destination’s rules all change the total. Tell us where and when, and we’ll put together an estimate: request a quote. For a closer look at what drives the price, see our guide to pet shipping costs.
